Protean Steel is owned and operated by Toby Sticpewich, who has over twenty years experience designing and building custom metal work. He studied design at the University of North Texas, where he was chosen to apprentice with the metal sculptor Richard Davis.
After university Sticpewich worked as a journeyman in a wide range of custom shops including trade show exhibit designers Delphi Productions, where he established a metalworking shop.
He then worked for six years with renowned master smith Toby Hickman at Waylan Smithy in Petaluma, California.
When Hickman retired in 2003, Sticpewich set up his own shop, Protean Steel, specializing in custom blacksmithing. He employs and collaborates with a number of local artisans, artists and smiths including John Haines, Ilana Crispi, and Cathy Richardson. Sticpewich combines the technical know-how of a certified structural welder with the artistic range and sensitivity to form of the artist-blacksmith.
